Frank: Elegia Andina (Andean Elegy)
Contreras: Alma Monarca (Monarch Soul)
Dvorak: Symphony No. 8
FOLK & SOUL is the second subscription concert of Chicago Sinfonietta’s 2024-25 Season. Guest Conductor Vinay Parameswaran collaborated with Music Director Mei-Ann Chen to bring audiences a program that contemplates ancestry, homelands and guiding spirits.
The concert opens with Gabriela Lena Frank’s Elegia Andina (Andean Elegy). The piece marks the composer’s first musical foray into exploring her diverse ethnic background, Chinese-Peruvian-Spanish (her mother) and Lithuanian-Jewish (her father). It draws on the Peruvian arca/ira zampoña panpipe to form musical elegiac poetry.
For the second season in a row, the works of Mexican Composer Juan Pablo Contreras are celebrated at the Sinfonietta. Newly commissioned Alma Monarca (Monarch Soul) explores the flight of two Monarch butterflies as they soar to their Mexican homeland near the Day of the Dead.
We close the evening with a genre-defining piece. Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 is one of his best-known works, celebrated for its integration of Czech folk melodies with classical symphonic structure. The symphony, in four movements, exudes warmth, lyricism, and a joyful spirit, characteristic of Dvořák's style.

Sibelius: Finlandia
Dvořák: Cello Concerto
Beethoven: Symphony No. 7
Beethoven set out to make the whole world drunk with joy, and from first note to last, his Seventh Symphony simply blazes with pure, irrepressible life-force.
It’s a torrent, a celebration, a cosmic dance. Sounds like we’re overselling it? Just wait until you hear the Seventh played live by the full London Philharmonic Orchestra under our dynamic guest conductor Vinay Parameswaran. But then, everything about this concert is off-the-scale: from Sibelius’s stirring hymn to freedom, to the unchained melody of Dvořák’s glorious Cello Concerto – an ideal showcase for the inspirational young American cellist Sterling Elliott.

Nielson: Helios Overture
Grieg: Piano Concerto
Sibelius: Symphony No. 5
Sibelius’s Symphony No. 5 would make it into many listeners’ top ten. It begins with a whisper from horns and timpani, which spreads through the woodwind section in a glorious evocation of sunrise. The second movement is a set of variations on a simple, wistful theme. Then comes the moment Sibelius fans have been waiting for – the magnificent ‘swan’ theme of the finale, with its jubilant horn chords and sweeping strings. Sibelius wrote it after witnessing the awe-inspiring sight of 16 swans in flight: “One of the great experiences of my life! God, how beautiful,” he wrote in his diary.
Grieg’s Piano Concerto is one of the most popular works in the orchestral repertoire. From its dramatic opening with its timpani roll to its anthemic finale, watch it in rehearsal with Finnish pianist Juho Pohjonen.
Finally, Nielsen’s Helios Overture. Inspired while travelling to Athens, the Danish composer traces the journey of the sun across the Aegean Sea in a wondrous celebration of the Greek god Helios.
